UNREST WITHIN WCW
Updated: Aug 23, 2021
Insider reports concerning World Championship Wrestling do not sound good.
Eric Bischoff's efforts to secure a buy out with Fusient Media are ongoing. Despite their promising press release back in January, Turner Broadcasting System are stalling.
The rumour is that TBS are not looking to air professional wrestling on their channels. If Turner go through with this decision, it will almost certainly be the killing blow to the struggling promotion.
Though WCW would stand a better chance at finding a new home than Extreme Championship Wrestling, which has all but folded after losing its TNN spot to the World Wrestling Federation, it is still highly unlikely. A representative for Fox Broadcasting Company recently stated that they have no interest in airing wrestling programming - another warning sign for Bischoff and Fusient.
Reliable sources confirm that unrest is growing within the WCW locker room. No one knows what lies ahead - or how long they have before the promotion folds. Apparently, some talents are already reaching out to Stamford, Connecticut in the hopes of securing a role within the WWF. For those higher up the card - for example, Goldberg, Sting, Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan - they have the safety net of guaranteed contracts with AOL Time Warner - however, considerable time away from the ring may hurt the longevity of their star power.
Some within the promotion blame Bischoff for bad management, for preferential treatment to Hulk Hogan and for chasing after Vince McMahon instead of focusing on his own product. Though the 'Monday Night Wars' led to some of the most exciting moments in wrestling, the damage done to WCW has been considerable - in part due to the car-crash TV nature of creative under Vince Russo. No matter where the blame lies however, one thing is clear - WCW is in serious, serious trouble.
